How do I know if my kitchen tap needs replacing?

If the finish is worn or corroded, the tap is stiff or loose at the base, it's leaking from the body rather than just the spout, or parts for an old or obscure brand no longer exist, replacement is usually the better spend than another repair. We supply and recommend a kitchen mixer or pull-down tap to suit your sink and how you use it, and check the isolation valves underneath at the same time.

The Most-Used Tap In The House

Your kitchen tap, replaced properly

The kitchen tap gets used more than any other tap in the home, which is exactly why it wears out first. We supply and recommend a mixer or pull-down tap to suit your sink and your kitchen, fit it cleanly through the existing benchtop opening, and check the isolation valves underneath while we're there.

Recent example: a new chrome mixer fitted over a double sink in Mosman, replacing a tired original that had gone stiff and started leaking at the base.

Mixers & Pull-Down Taps

Mixers and pull-down taps, fitted cleanly

Whichever style suits your kitchen, the job is the same: isolate the water, remove the old tap, fit the new one through the existing opening, and check every connection underneath before we leave.

Recent example: a brushed steel pull-down tap fitted in a Freshwater kitchen, replacing an older mixer that no longer matched the renovated space.

How It Works

Getting your kitchen tap replaced

Step 1

Check the tap and valves

We look at the tap body, the base and the isolation valves underneath before recommending replacement.

Step 2

Isolate the water

The supply to the sink is shut off before any work starts.

Step 3

Fit the new tap

New tapware fitted through the existing benchtop opening, valves replaced too if they're worn or seized.

Step 4

Test for leaks

Water's turned back on and every connection checked before we leave.

Replacing other taps around the house too? See tap replacement for laundry, bath, hose and filter taps, or basin & bathroom tap replacement for the bathroom side.

FAQ

Kitchen Tap Replacement: your questions answered

Plumbing problems can be extremely frustrating. Our licensed Sydney plumbers are here to provide fast, reliable answers and solutions.

What's the difference between a kitchen mixer and a pull-down tap?

A mixer has a fixed or swivelling spout and blends hot and cold water through a single internal cartridge. A pull-down tap is a style of mixer where the spout head pulls out on a hose for rinsing, useful over a deep or double kitchen sink. Both are repaired and replaced the same way; which suits you comes down to your sink and how you cook and clean up.

Do you supply the kitchen tap, or do I buy my own?

We supply and recommend kitchen tapware suited to your sink, your kitchen and your budget, so you're not left sourcing the right tap and fittings yourself.

Will you check the valves under the sink as well?

Yes. The isolation valves under a kitchen sink take a lot of use over the years and are often seized or corroded by the time the tap above them needs replacing. We check them as part of every kitchen tap job and replace them if they're not shutting off reliably.

Can you replace a kitchen tap without damaging my benchtop?

Yes. Kitchen taps are fitted through a hole already cut in the sink or benchtop, so a like-for-like replacement doesn't involve cutting anything new. If you're changing to a different tap style with a different base size, we'll talk you through what's involved before we start.

My kitchen tap is dripping. Does it need replacing or just repairing?

Often a drip is a worn cartridge, a straightforward repair rather than a full replacement. See leaking tap repairs for that. We'll always check first and only recommend replacement when the tap itself is genuinely at the end of its life.
